According to the definition provided by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), a machine tool is defined as: “A powered device that cannot be manually carried by human force. In essence, it is a device that, through a combination of mechanical, electrical, chemical, and other processes, alters raw material (workpiece) to transform it into the desired output.”

Given the various types of material processing methods, machines are divided into dozens of categories. But what is the difference between them?

    Industrial machinery can generally be divided into two main categories based on their functionality: metal-cutting machines and metal-forming machines.

    • Metal-Cutting Machines include drilling machines, milling machines, grinding machines, boring machines, planers, electrical discharge machines, and others.
    • Metal-Forming Machines include lathes, drilling machines, punching machines, and more.

  • Lathe Machine

    A lathe is a machine primarily used to rotate and shape a workpiece using a cutting tool. On a lathe, tools such as drills, taps, dies, and knurling tools are used to carry out the turning process.

    Milling Machine

    A milling machine is a tool primarily used for processing various surfaces on a workpiece with a milling cutter. Typically, the rotation of the milling cutter is the main motion, while the movement of the workpiece or the cutter is considered a complementary motion.
    This machine can process plates, grooves, curved surfaces, gears, and more. It is also capable of processing complex profiles more efficiently than planers. Milling machines are widely used in the manufacturing and repair of machinery.

    Drilling Machine

    A drilling machine is a device primarily used to machine holes in a workpiece using a drill. Typically, the rotation of the drill is the main motion, while the axial movement of the drill is the complementary motion.
    Drilling machines have a simple structure and relatively low machining accuracy. These machines can drill holes, countersink, enlarge, or perform tapping and other operations. During the machining process, the workpiece remains stationary while the tool moves. The key feature of a drilling machine is the fixed workpiece and the rotating tool.

    Grinding Machine

    A grinding machine is a device that uses abrasive tools to grind the surface of a workpiece. Most grinding machines use high-speed rotating wheels to polish the surface, while a few others use alternative abrasive tools such as oilstones, abrasive belts, or polishing materials for processing. Examples include honing machines, belt sanders, polishing machines, and more.

    Boring Machine

    A boring machine primarily uses a boring tool to enlarge or refine pre-existing holes in a workpiece. Typically, the rotation of the boring tool is the main motion, while the movement of the tool or workpiece is complementary.
    This machine is mainly used for machining high-precision holes or completing multiple holes simultaneously. It can also process other surfaces related to the holes on the workpiece. Various tools and equipment can be used for boring, milling, and cutting.
    The machining accuracy and quality of a boring machine are higher than those of a drilling machine. Boring machines are essential equipment for machining large components.
    CNC boring machines can achieve an accuracy of up to 0.01 mm on large surfaces exceeding 4 meters, providing a smooth and level surface. They are widely used in manufacturing industrial machinery such as large shears and press brakes, where precision and symmetry are crucial.

  • Planer Machine

    The planer machine is a linear motion machine that uses a cutting tool to plane, groove, or shape the surface of a workpiece. Therefore, it is primarily used in workshops for single-piece production, mass production, or machinery repairs. In many cases, it is replaced by milling machines.
